What Are Cataracts?

As you age, proteins begin to break down and form clumps on the natural lens of the eye, preventing light from properly reaching your retina. This clouding of the natural lens is known as a cataract and is usually a result of the natural aging process.

While many patients don’t notice symptoms with early cataracts, as they develop, you may experience:

  • Cloudy or blurry vision
  • Gradual dulling of colors
  • Poor night vision
  • Light sensitivity
  • Halos and glare around lights
  • Difficulty reading in low light
  • Double vision in one eye
  • Frequent prescription changes

Once your cataracts begin to interfere with things like driving, reading, or working, it’s time to consider cataract surgery to restore your vision.

Advanced Cataract Surgery at Lalin Eye

With over 3 million cataract surgeries performed each year, lens replacement remains the most frequently performed surgery in the U.S. and is also among the safest. During cataract surgery, your cloudy natural lens is removed and replaced with a clear lens implant known as an IOL. The lens implant is made of a pliable material, which is folded and inserted through a narrow incision into the eye.

At Lalin Eye, we offer advanced laser cataract surgery with the state-of-the-art Alcon LenSx system, designed to enhance precision, safety, and accuracy. Before your laser cataract surgery, Dr. Lalin will create a 3-D map of your eye and transfer this information to the femtosecond laser, which will use these precise measurements to carry out a customized treatment plan.

Premium IOL Options

Intraocular lenses (IOLs) are artificial lens implants that replace the natural lens of the eye after cataract surgery. The IOL you choose to replace the cloudy lens (cataract) and restore vision also presents a unique opportunity to reduce or eliminate your need for glasses after surgery.

We use advanced diagnostic technology before surgery, including iTrace, to precisely measure the eye and determine the optimal lens implant power, ensuring the vision you have after surgery is exactly as expected. Some of our premium IOL options include:

PanOptix Pro

If you want to enjoy unparalleled freedom from visual aids, the Clareon PanOptix Pro IOL could be right for you. This trifocal lens offers clear vision at near, intermediate, and far distances and uses proprietary ENLIGHTEN NXT technology to deliver next-level light utilization. This directly translates to sharp, vivid, glasses-free vision that enhances every activity!

Vivity

The Acrysof IQ Vivity IOL is an extended depth of focus (EDOF) lens that offers patients a broad range of vision across multiple distances. Unlike multifocal and trifocal lenses, Vivity stretches light instead of splitting it for more seamless visual transitions. This lens is excellent for patients who want to reduce their dependence on glasses and minimize visual disturbances, such as halos and glare.

Light Adjustable Lens

The RxSight™ Light Adjustable Lens (LAL) is the first and only IOL that allows your ophthalmologist to customize the lens after cataract surgery for the crispest vision possible. Through non-invasive UV-light treatments, your ophthalmologist can adjust the already-implanted lens in the weeks following surgery based on your personal visual preferences.

Clareon Toric lens to the Premium IOL

The Alcon Clareon® Toric IOL is a premium, monofocal, foldable, hydrophobic acrylic lens designed for cataract patients to correct pre-existing corneal astigmatism while delivering exceptional, long-lasting, and stable distance vision. It builds on the proven AcrySof® platform but utilizes a advanced material that reduces glare, halos, and glistenings.

During your cataract surgery consultation, your eye surgeon will fit you with the best intraocular lens implant for your lifestyle.

What is RLE?

If you have presbyopia, refractive errors, or early cataracts and still want to enjoy the benefits of premium IOLs, you may be a good candidate for refractive lens exchange (RLE). This procedure is nearly identical to cataract surgery and involves removing the natural lens of the eye and replacing it with a premium lens to correct your vision.

This vision correction procedure is often recommended as an alternative to LASIK for patients over 40, those with presbyopia, or those with severe refractive errors. A unique benefit of RLE is that, in addition to reducing your need for visual aids, it prevents future cataracts, safeguarding your vision for years to come.

Cost & Financing

At Lalin Eye, we want to help make your dream vision affordable. While Medicare and insurance often cover the cost of cataract surgery with a monofocal lens, achieving greater visual freedom with premium IOLs and RLE involves additional out-of-pocket expenses.

We offer flexible monthly payment options through CareCredit, including low- or no-interest plans, so you can easily fit the procedure into your budget. CareCredit provides fast pre-approval, usually within 30 minutes, and we will be happy to answer any questions you may have regarding our fees or financing.
